I’m a pretty big fan of the cloud’s treatment, the random skeletal type connections, the warm/cool tones, flowing composition and some random structure smack dab in the middle…. hmphm

Ever try the Z Brush sketchpad????  It’s pretty fun once you understand how the tools translate. Plus!  You can draw in symmetry!!! Joy!

In this case, tonight I open Z Brush without a project in mind – once the ‘energy’ was in the right place, ie: I felt good, I sketched a couple gestures and the idea of a mother holding her child said go gogogoggoo!!!  That’s all it took.  I’d like to learn more about fabric folds etc so I think this would a good project to do so….

Did a quick color pass in photoshop…

A work in progress, the thing I like about Z Brush is how flexible things are.  I reclaimed my power on this one as it was a prelimary Zsphere pose, trust me – it was really bad….

Leaving a piece like that is not energizing to the artist.  Thus, I came back and re-channeled some learned stuff.

Another quicky…. breaking apart the body one piece at a time, maybe I’ll combine them all at the end to make a monster.

Man it was tough to find reference for this one.

After the inorganic battleground, I thought a fist pounding the ground made sense.

I recorded a whopping 1:25 hours of 100% commentaried Matt Vogt Painting Process.  I would like to do these more and more.  Yesterday night is when this took place.  Now please note what you’ll witness is an artist warming up from a day or two painting break.  It’s like training a muscle (not speaking from experience) but we achieved some interesting results despite staring art making doom directly in the face.  Yes.

This is the part of the video that was intentionally depicted to show how an artist can get his butt kicked by his own work:

*Warning* It’s never past the “animatic stage” meaning there will be missing audio, storyboards appearing instead of footage, and the all time production’s favorite – changing to temporary character builds….

This was to be the first of many episodes, the first glimpse of our living characters and their routines.  Looking back it’s super cliché but that’s what made us laugh.  Enjoy!

You’ll be amazed at what you can create in virtual 3D space! Join us in an introduction to video game, film and character production! By the end of the week, you’ll have made your very own 3D animated segment!

‘Who is this course for?

This course will excite any young learner who has ever wondered how 3D Video Games, Hollywood Visual FX, Pixar films, and any other creative ‘well paid’ projects are made.  The approach in this curriculum revolves around the fundamental principles of the entertainment industry capitalizing on independent study and team based projects.  Geared towards film, game and creative expression, the learners will have hands on experience with what it takes to create a short film using 3D animation.  The instructor, Matt Vogt, has worked on a variety of game and film related projects and education programs; his approach to teaching such exciting and dynamic principles rely on clarity through simple foundations which will be carried on for years, and careers to come!

Topic 1: Welcome to the “cockpit”, your creative station to settle down and create to your imagination’s wish!  Matt and the learners will explore the exciting features of Blender 2.5 and start building things in 3D = fun!

Topic 2: Project briefing.  Here we go over the role a short film plays in a multimedia designers portfolio, what constitutes a solid story and how is it made manifest?

Topic 3: What makes a memorable, iconic character?  What is experience?  How do we create expressive 3D characters ready for animation?

Topic 4: Crash course in film directing = storyboarding, layout, staging, lighting, you name it!

Topic 5: The “Animation Principles” ?  What made Steamboat Willy, aka “Mickey” a living breathing character?  How does one interpolate the mechanics of motion with a living, breathing character (so it seems)?  These will be answered.

Brennan, being a seasoned duder from United Front Games hooked up some wonderful advice for us learning artists.  His area of focus is total concept art.  Concept, idea and function design – highest priority!

My favorite part of the conversation was his talk on Input VS Output.  He reminded us of how amazing people can render (noodle away) at Concept Art.org or Deviant Art yet the final product begs the question why?  What’s the function, story, or significance?  Does it matter if this design exists or not?  Indeed, this contrasting concept became clear as I redress my work towards high objectives while continuing related studies.

Personally an area for me to focus is considering a clear (not vivid) vision of what my created universes look like. Outlining the consistent limits and strengths of a design before beginning makes a lot of sense now.

Remember, “how cool” is always secondary to “the right idea”.

Talking with the local artists readdressed my process as we shared and compared.  I now see the different benefits and usages for going straight-ahead-painting vs design line drawing.  Sweet.

And by far, Brennan enlightened us more than most artists with his attention to study.  Image making has its place in process awareness but Brennan reminded us all to look not at “the image” but what is that you’re looking at?  Is it a green truck shape with a blue background or 4 wheels attached by suspension, drive train, engine etc and can you draw this?  That’s exciting! To successfully rotate a design visually is where it’s at.

Anyways, to further my rant of awesomeness, I took his words to heart on an immediate study in which I found a great statue shot on corbis.com and did a quick sketch for acquainting myself.  After, I imagined what the backside of the statue was and painted it. The creative design goodness continues!

It would be very interesting to record photographically, not the stages of a painting, but its metamorphoses.  One would see perhaps by what course a mind finds its way toward the crystallization of its dream. But what is really very serious is to see that the pictures does not change basically, that the initial vision remains almost intact in spite of appearance.

Cultivate an ever-continuous power of observation. Wherever you are, be always ready to make slight notes of postures, groups and incidents. Store up in he mind without ceasing a continuous stream of observations from which to make selections later. Above all things get abroad, see the sunlight, and everything that is to be seen, the power of selection will follow. Be continually making mental notes, make them again and again, test what you remember by sketches until you have got them fixed. Do not be backward at using every device and making every experiment that ingenuity can devise, in order to attain that sense of completeness which nature so beautifully provides, always bearing in mind the limitations of the materials in which you work.

And some study advice?

Paint a hundred studies: keep any number of clean canvases ready, of all shapes and sizes so that you are never held back by the sudden need of one. You can’t do sketches enough. Sketch everything and keep your curiosity fresh.

Bonnie Ayotte recommended me using the plumb line as well:

When drawing from the model, never be without the plumb line in the left hand. Everyone has a bias, either to the right hand or the left of the vertical. The use of the plumb line rectifies this error and develops a keen appreciation of the vertical.
