Pillars of the Earth Illustration

So I’m reading the 6000 page Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth. It’s a really, really good book and I’m about 2/3 through.  I know they’ve make a TV series etc etc (which I close my eyes to) but for me, reading fiction (a rarity – though a growing interest), grants me the opporunty to stretch my visual storytelling database.  I thought I’d share a sketch I’m working on, it’s a love-hate kind of thing me and this piece, it’s coming along:

I’m a pretty big fan of the cloud’s treatment, the random skeletal type connections, the warm/cool tones, flowing composition and some random structure smack dab in the middle…. hmphm

‘Crow Separation’ Video Tutorial !

Hey Everyone!

I recorded a whopping 1:25 hours of 100% commentaried Matt Vogt Painting Process.  I would like to do these more and more.  Yesterday night is when this took place.  Now please note what you’ll witness is an artist warming up from a day or two painting break.  It’s like training a muscle (not speaking from experience) but we achieved some interesting results despite staring art making doom directly in the face.  Yes.

This is the part of the video that was intentionally depicted to show how an artist can get his butt kicked by his own work:

(it was getting shaky in there) And this?

  • Composition
  • Color Picking
  • ‘Sweet Tweaks’ to keep the flow going and never give up (seen middle image?)
  • Using layer adjustments to our advantage
  • A layered, yet committed (backward) approach

A long time friend always had an eye for this piece – it’ll be his now!

40″ Giclée Canvas Stretched

Random Abstract: Splinter Explosion!

Throwing down some random processes. Took no more than 20 minutes! Crazy.

Have to admit, I was kind of showing off for a special somebody. It began with this splinter I found at Manning Park:

Ford F-150 (junker)

Found North of  Harrison Lake, East side, heading to Lillooet Lake!  Matter of factly, Charlotte took the photo as we drove by – beautiful!

150-06

The process on this one was unique in the sense that I blocked in the colors first, started over and drew her from scratch, then overlaid the sketch on top!  Fun.

Autumn 2009

Happy Autumn everyone! It’s with us now – fog as thick as milk, coldness, leaves dying, farmers taking stock, hibernation etc

For this piece I wanted to focus on the vibrancy and colour of Autumn, mixed with a cool breeze and that burning leaves smell.  It’s a crazy time of year here.

WaterMan + Ideation

I sat down to do a painting one night, itching to explore without photo reference – shelfing the studies….  I didn’t have an idea so I did 2 or 3 very quick sketches before the idea of an explorer finding a “WaterMan” came to mind.

The Capilano Grav-Bot

Spotted in Vancouver’s Capilano University courtyard.  Somewhere in the near future Grav-Bot’s will replace human watchmen due to their functional ability to remove unwanted guests from premise.  Unfortunately, this bot has a dent on his brain….
