‘ The Mother’ Round 2, Z-Brush Study

Well I destroyed the old sculpture. There was some wierd topology pinching which I thought the Z Brush geometry helpers would fix (such as equalize, re-mesh etc)… well they didn’t, instead they destroyed my ZSphere polygroups, so I just started over again with great results.

Pillars of the Earth Illustration

So I’m reading the 6000 page Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth. It’s a really, really good book and I’m about 2/3 through. I know they’ve make a TV series etc etc (which I close my eyes to) but for me, reading fiction (a rarity – though a growing interest), grants me the opporunty to stretch my visual storytelling database. I thought I’d share a sketch I’m working on, it’s a love-hate kind of thing me and this piece, it’s coming along:
I’m a pretty big fan of the cloud’s treatment, the random skeletal type connections, the warm/cool tones, flowing composition and some random structure smack dab in the middle…. hmphm

‘The Mother’ Z Brush Study

Work in progress, like all these projects! Woohoo!!
Ever try the Z Brush sketchpad???? It’s pretty fun once you understand how the tools translate. Plus! You can draw in symmetry!!! Joy!
In this case, tonight I open Z Brush without a project in mind – once the ‘energy’ was in the right place, ie: I felt good, I sketched a couple gestures and the idea of a mother holding her child said go gogogoggoo!!! That’s all it took. I’d like to learn more about fabric folds etc so I think this would a good project to do so….

A work in progress, the thing I like about Z Brush is how flexible things are. I reclaimed my power on this one as it was a prelimary Zsphere pose, trust me – it was really bad….
Leaving a piece like that is not energizing to the artist. Thus, I came back and re-channeled some learned stuff.

I do hear it’s possible but it sure felt impossible making really mechanical type creations. I learnt some neat things with more complicated masking via ‘poly groups’ but the workflow seems counter intuitive. Intuitive workflows for me allow me to go back and forth without making unchangeable updates. Matter of fact, these damned things caused some frustration…..
(I don’t know why posted that, it looks like a red face, actually that’s my face when I worked on some different workflows)
(it’s an organic approach to something hard-bodied….)
And finally! Some cool editing techniques, which are impossible to edit. wow….

Now we’re not talking about any super big updates. I thought I’d try a different presentation, smooth her out and just call it quits for now. It was an exercise in staging and pulling different pieces together. I think I did ok in that – moving on!

A quick study, despite the lack of anatomy study (coming next) I was pretty happy with the random pose that came about. I think balance really helps it.

Hey Everyone!
I recorded a whopping 1:25 hours of 100% commentaried Matt Vogt Painting Process. I would like to do these more and more. Yesterday night is when this took place. Now please note what you’ll witness is an artist warming up from a day or two painting break. It’s like training a muscle (not speaking from experience) but we achieved some interesting results despite staring art making doom directly in the face. Yes.
This is the part of the video that was intentionally depicted to show how an artist can get his butt kicked by his own work:

The Incomplete First Episode.

Rooting up the past again, this was around 2004-2005 in which friend, Isaac Mulgrew and I co-created the seed of an episodic comedy series titled Heroes. Two heroes, one a roided rage and the other a genius Telekinestor.
*Warning* It’s never past the “animatic stage” meaning there will be missing audio, storyboards appearing instead of footage, and the all time production’s favorite – changing to temporary character builds….

Found North of Harrison Lake, East side, heading to Lillooet Lake! Matter of factly, Charlotte took the photo as we drove by – beautiful!
The process on this one was unique in the sense that I blocked in the colors first, started over and drew her from scratch, then overlaid the sketch on top! Fun.
